Riga Medical Institute was found on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Latvia in 1950. The Institute was renamed as Medical Academy of Latvia in 1990. In April 5th, 1998, the Medical Academy of Latvia received its name based on its actual activities as Rīga Stradiņš University.

In 2013, Riga Stradins University launched the Medical Education Technology Centre, which offers healthcare students the great chance to use technological tools in their medical training.
